K-Pop Movie Recap: A Look Into ‘ALWAYS LALISA’ Documentary

The story of a k-pop superstar as she embarks on an ambitious solo journey. Lalisa Manobal’s documentary ‘ALWAYS LALISA’ brings a new look into the idol’s professional life, through breathtaking concert clips, behind-the-scenes content and commentary from the artist herself.

Going Solo

Starting from the filming of ‘ROCKSTAR’ M/V in Bangkok, the movie follows the idol as she establishes her company LLOUD, faces criticism, prepares for album releases.

The story dives into the artist’s creative process. Lisa shares the newly-found aspects of going solo, including finding producers, but also having to work on singing – an activity she had been discouraged to follow in the past – to become a well-rounded artist.

The movie also provides us with an analysis of Lisa’s ‘ALTEREGO’ concept – the 5 characters that portray her versatility and her exploration of different styles and genres.

After a mention at Lisa’s big step in acting with her role in ‘The White Lotus Season 3’, the movie focuses on her preparations for Coachella and concludes with her magnificent performance at the festival.

The 100′ show concludes with heartfelt moments between Lisa and BLACKPINK members, as well as team members.

Lalisa’s Personal Confessions

The emotional depth of the singer doesn’t go unnoticed. Lisa shares the story of Teacher Nok, a person who shaped her life to who she is now but eventually succumbed to his illness.

She also reveals the source of inspiration for her track ‘Dream’ – the result of a past relationship.

In this context, she makes a reference to k-pop’s strict training system, as well as the concept of dating bans and their negative effect on artists who simply want to share their love.

Moreover, she addresses the issue of hate comments and death threats. She keeps a mature stance towards the ‘n-word’ controversy that has surrounded BLACKPINK throughout the years, admitting to not having received proper education on the topic and reflecting on her mistake.

Something that stood out for me in the film was Lisa’s continuous transition between English, Thai and Korean. Not only did it show authenticity since Lisa is a polyglot, but it also highlighted Lisa’s unique cultural backgrounds and influences.

The documentary has been released on IMAX and it’s totally worth it! An immersive, stunning experience, with high-quality visuals and engaging audio system.
